NYAPC Carolling

NYAPC will be carolling on Sunday December 9th at 4:00 pm. We will meet at the church and go on together to sing in various places. We will probably start at the Franklin Shelter a few blocks from the church, and then go on to 14th and P street to sing at Whole Foods and other places in that neighborhood.

We really need to have some good strong singers to keep things moderately musical, so please do come out and sing! There are rumours that we will be having some hot mulled cider somewhere along the way.

Our own Martha Davis is organizing this event.

U.S. Music Camp International Children’s Choir Sings at NYAPC

This coming weekend, we are hosting an international choir of young people. Please see the press release information posted here.

An international children’s choir of 35 young people—14 from Romania; 17 from Ukraine and 4 from California, will be performing at New York Avenue Presbyterian Church on Sunday, October 28, at 11:00 a.m.

The choir is a project of Music Camp International, an international children’s charity that brings music education to children, especially poor and disadvantaged families in Eastern Europe. The children, ages 10-17, will sing a variety of repertoire in five languages: English, Romanian, Russian, Ukrainian, and Latin.

Founded by Connie Fortunato in 2002, Music Camp International’s purpose is to take the healing gift of music to all children, regardless of economic or cultural status. Music Camp International is based on the belief that all children have music inside, and in the process of discovering and developing that gift, each child develops dignity, self-esteem, and hope. The week long Music Camps provide instruction and outstanding music involvement for orphans, children in the social service system, and all children without an audition or cost to them. Each child on tour has participated in at least one Music Camp in their own country.

Music Camp International’s home office is in Santa Cruz, California. It is also a registered charity in both Romania and Ukraine, with national offices in Kiev and Bucharest. Music Camp International works closely with the Ministry of Education in Romania and the Department of Social Services in Ukraine, and has earned the endorsement of the highest government officials and advocates for children’s affairs.

Open House, Sunday!

No, we weren't putting the choir room on the market...although housing sales are still really strong in DC...hmmm.

On Sunday, September 30, the choir hosted an open house, complete with food--of course--and lots of fellowship. As promised, here are photos of the grand event. We signed up two new choir members, making the event an unqualified success.

Tutti Verticale

Last weekend we enjoyed a great choir clinic with George Singleton. He taught us how to loosen our palates and reminded us to keep our columns straight--tutti verticale!!

If you missed the session (oh where, oh where have the mens' sections gone?), here are some photos. The afternoon concluded with a tasty lunch in Chinatown.

Stay tuned for photos from Sunday's Choir Open House.

...And don't forget, you can make comments to this blog, give suggestions, cheer us on, etc. etc. etc.

The First Posting Gives You a Choice!

We've created the NYAPC Choir blog to help form an online resource for the choir. If we manage to get our act together, we can use this space to post info on upcoming events and works, scheduling, and retreats.

Which leads us to our very first interactive feature:

What would you like to do after the choir retreat?
Go see a DC United game.
Go have Dim Sum.
Go have a wine tasting in Virginia.
